the war

I came across an old box in the attic. My grandfather had been in the war. This I assumed was his place for keeping those secrets. Inside contains a small article of writing, scribbled on the parchment. It reads as follows:

the war they said,
could've been easily won,
had we not simply surrendered,
to be taken captive
behind what you could not see
as enemy lines
blurring our vision
into a million diamond rings,
which in reflection
showered the sky tonight
with beacons to guide
our lost soldiers safely
through the desert.
